What we checked

We checked 495 builders found through Google listings across Preston, Brunswick, Coburg, Reservoir, Northcote, Thornbury, Fawkner, Pascoe Vale, Heidelberg and Bundoora.

425 had a website linked from their listing. Of those, 384 loaded as working pages in our checks. We also looked for phone links, forms and a contact action on the first mobile screen.

The sample was assembled before checking the websites, so businesses were not selected because their site looked good or bad. These findings describe what we recorded on 16 October 2026.

The first screen on a phone

Among the 384 sites that loaded as working pages, 167 (43%) showed no visible contact action on the first mobile screen.

Contact details may still have been available further down the page or through a menu. This check records what was visible before scrolling. It does not establish that a customer could not enquire, or that the business lost work.

Project photos help someone decide if your work fits. A visible enquiry button gives them a next step while they are looking.

Phone links and forms

On 146 of the 384 working websites (38%), our check detected no phone link or clear phone action. A number written on a page and a link that opens the dialler are different things.

We detected no visible contact form on 222 of those sites (58%). That figure comes from passive detection. A business may prefer phone calls, use another enquiry route, or have a form the check did not detect.

We did not send test enquiries. These figures do not tell us whether a form delivers messages or whether someone answers the phone.

A check for your own site

  1. Open your homepage on a phone.
  2. Look for a clear way to discuss a project.
  3. Check that the button reaches your contact details or form.

If you use a contact form, send yourself a test message and check where it arrives. This is something you can try on your own site; it was not part of our passive audit.

Method and limits

The sample covers businesses returned through Google listings in the ten named suburbs, deduplicated within this trade. It is not a census of every builder business in Melbourne, and it does not assess Google rankings or listing completeness.

The headline combines 70 listings without a website link and 30 screened loading failures. We left out 11 not-assessable results that involved access blocks or browser-only failures. Mobile-contact, phone-link and form figures use only the 384 working websites as their denominator.

Checks were passive and automated. We opened public website links and recorded visible signals. We did not call businesses, submit forms or measure enquiry numbers. Loading problems can be temporary, and websites and listings change.

Each trade keeps its own sample. A business may appear in more than one trade search, so the trade totals cannot be added together as a unique-business count. We publish aggregate findings, without individual business names, URLs or research screenshots.
